8-SPEED M SPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION STEPTRONIC WITH DRIVELOGIC.
The 8-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic sets new benchmarks in dynamics and shifting. The unusually fine increments between gears and the extremely rapid shifts facilitate optimum force delivery at all speeds, guaranteeing the ultimate in power and efficiency.
Particularly at high speeds, the eighth gear reduces the engine speed, in turn decreases both fuel consumption and engine noise. The driver can shift manually in "D" mode as well as in "S" mode, via the M gear lever or the M gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. In manual "S" mode, the M Automatic Transmission Steptronic does not automatically shift up and the engine reaches max speeds when necessary.
The driver can shift very dynamically at top speeds and use the Drivelogic function to set the shifting behaviour to one of three choices. From comfortable and efficient to dynamic to racetrack dynamics with extra-short shifting times. A torque converter clutch ensures a direct connection between the engine and the transmission, with minimal loss of power. When the vehicle is at a standstill, there is no automatic force-transmitting connection between the engine and the transmission, which prevents "creeping". However, while manoeuvring, for example, a short tap of the accelerator activates "creeping on demand". This is an M exclusive feature.
xDRIVE WITH M-SPECIFIC FEATURES.
The intelligent BMW all-wheel drive system.
The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system smoothly distributes drive power to the axles. In order to meet and surpass all expectations for traction, directional stability and driving safety simultaneously, the electronically operated system adjusts the force distribution with lightning speed.
It can also counteract over and understeering, additionally improving the vehicle's directional stability and handling.
Dynamically in narrow bends.
In BMW M vehicles, xDrive places more emphasis on the rear axle, which also contributes to advancing dynamic characteristics. Priority is given to directing power to the rear wheels, and then to the front wheels. Especially when driving through curves, it minimises the tendency to understeer. This means that the driver can accelerate earlier and more forcefully, fully enjoying the vehicle's high driving dynamic potential. If desired, the front axle can receive up to 50 percent more of the drive torque. When Dynamic Stability Control is fully deactivated, controlled drifts are even possible.
M COMPOUND BRAKES.
M compound brakes have benefitted from motorsport technology, allowing them to maintain constant effectiveness and brake-fade stabilisation, even under demanding usage.
The use of various highly resilient materials results in excellent thermal stability, long-term durability and precise braking. It also reduces the brakes' weight, which has a positive effect on agility, dynamics, acceleration and fuel consumption.
The perforated, ventilated brake disc rings with six-piston brake callipers at the front ensure optimal responsiveness in wet conditions and improve heat dissipation. The Blue metallic brake callipers with the characteristic M logo strongly emphasise the brake discs' sporty appearance and distinct, authentic M design.
RACING CHARACTERISTICS.
With its irresistible dynamics, impressive agility and precise handling, the new BMW X6 M sets new standards in its segment. Launch Control lets you get off to a perfect start. With Dynamic Drive, Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Damper Control, you can adjust the vehicle set-up to suit the driving conditions.
Launch Control
Launch Control allows a warm engine to achieve maximum acceleration from a standing start. The driver deactivates Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) by holding down the DSC button, then activates Launch Control. Next, the driver selects the sequential mode with driving programme 3 and keeps the vehicle in place by holding down the foot brake and presses the accelerator to kickdown. Once the starting-flag symbol in the instrument display becomes illuminated, the engine will be automatically set to its ideal starting speed while the accelerator is pushed down. Then the driver releases the brake while maintaining kickdown, and the vehicle will accelerate to the maximum until the accelerator is released. The 8-speed M Steptronic constantly sets the gearshift points so that when shifting up, the next optimal engine speed is available. This is a feature which is destined to delight drivers with dynamic, sporty ambitions.
Dynamic Performance Control
Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) increases athleticism and optimises driving dynamics by flexibly distributing drive power between the wheels on the rear axle. In combination with the other suspension regulation systems, DPC provides even greater driving precision and dynamics. Specifically designed for M, the required steering angle is reduced and accuracy is improved. The rear axle features two electronically controlled transmissions, in addition to the axle differential, which enable Dynamic Performance Control to monitor the driving situation and accordingly distribute more torque to the outer rear wheel when driving through bends.
Dynamic Drive
Active hydraulically controlled stabilisers allow the Dynamic Drive suspension control system to reduce the vehicle's body roll when driving through curves or during sudden swerves. This increases comfort and agility, and makes steering even more precise. Ultimately, the driver can take full advantage of the tremendously high dynamic driving potential of the BMW M. When driving straight ahead, the two halves of a stabiliser remain separate, so that the damping and suspension are not affected and can function optimally. The system uses numerous sensors to analyse the driving situation and minimise body roll on curves in accordance with lateral acceleration. Active roll distribution between the front and rear axles mitigates critical driving situations. Due to M specific calibration with a stronger roll momentum on the rear axle, the vehicle is characterised by increased dynamic driving characteristics. The vehicle reacts even more directly and actively to steering input thanks to targeted M specific steering response and reaction to load changes.
Dynamic Damper Control
The low-set suspension's Dynamic Damper Control constantly adjusts the damper characteristics to suit the current driving situation and road surface. Using the driving dynamics buttons on the centre console, the driver can attune the suspension to suit their respective current preferences, from comfortable with no less dynamic driving potential, all the way to extremely sporty settings that emphasise an active driving style and pure M driving pleasure. In Comfort mode, the dampers react more softly, minimising irritating vertical vehicle motion on uneven surfaces. In the Sport and Sport+ modes, on the other hand, the dampers are set to an M specific tightness for additional athletic driving pleasure on winding country roads, where the M specific high performance of the vehicle can best be enjoyed. Wheel and body movements are reduced to a minimum for maximum driving dynamics on smooth roads. Pre-programmed settings in the M Drive menu can be directly selected via the M buttons on the steering wheel. Motion is measured by sensors on each wheel and then analysed by a control unit. The dampers are adjusted within a fraction of a second. The dampers' compression and rebound settings are constantly readjusted independently of each other. The result is exemplary road holding thanks to optimal damping and suspension on every wheel.
M DRIVE.
M Drive allows for the individual configuration of personal driver profiles from comfortable gliding all the way up to a sporty, direct set-up for use on the racetrack.
Activating either of the two saved profiles (and all of the settings saved with them) is as simple as touching one of the two M Drive buttons integrated into the M leather steering wheel.
The M driving dynamics buttons, for adjusting all of the individually configurable drive train and suspension functions, are arranged on the centre console around the gear selector. Independently of each other, the driver can select the DSC mode, the engine's performance characteristics, the adaptive suspension parameters, the M Servotronic steering characteristics, the shift options for the 8-speed M Steptronic and the appearance of the Head-Up Display.
An individualised detailed vehicle set-up can be created via the iDrive menu, and it can be saved by holding down one of the two M Drive buttons on the M leather steering wheel.
M SERVOTRONIC.
Drivers can enjoy optimum power steering support in every driving situation with M Servotronic. It adjusts the steering assistance to suit the current speed and delivers a direct and precise steering response even at high speeds.
It also ensures supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, manoeuvring or navigating narrow or twisting roads.
A control unit uses electronic speed measurements to determine the necessary power steering support for every driving situation. The power steering support is finely adjusted via the electric control unit, making it far more precise than conventional servo-assisted power steering systems that rely on engine speed for orientation.
With M Servotronic, minimal physical effort is necessary for steering at lower speeds. As speed increases, however, the steering support required is reduced continuously so as to ensure more direct contact with the road and therefore optimum directional stability. M Servotronic is specifically tailored for the M line and offers three settings for individual configuration. They can be selected with the push of a button.
BMW EFFICIENTDYNAMICS TECHNOLOGIES.
Automatic Start/Stop function
The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is actually moving. While waiting at robots or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function takes the opportunity to save fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a complete standstill and the driver's foot is on the brake. A signal in the Info Display shows when the function is active. As soon as the driver switches from the brake to the accelerator, the engine starts up again automatically within a fraction of a second. The function never compromises driving comfort or safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its optimal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated or cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned. If necessary, a central control unit restarts the engine even when at a standstill, for example if the car begins to roll or if condensation starts to form on the windscreen. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.
Brake Energy Regeneration
Every time the driver brakes, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever the driver brakes or takes his or her foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run constantly, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance, In other words, classic BMW EfficientDynamics.
