Its high-performance M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder inline petrol engine develops 375 kW and an impressive torque of 650 Nm. The M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder inline petrol engine features superior power delivery and the striking characteristic M engine sound. Two mono-scroll turbochargers, direct High-Precision Injection, fully variable valve control and variable camshaft control ensure outstanding performance with 375 kW and 650 Nm of torque.
M specific suspension.
The M specific adaptive suspension highlights the vehicle's great dynamic potential. The COMFORT drive mode smooths out uneven road surfaces with ease. The SPORT mode is perfect for country roads and uneven racetracks. Uncompromisingly direct, SPORT+ guarantees a particularly precise ride experience on even racetracks.
M xDrive.
M xDrive with Active M differential guarantees maximum traction and driving dynamics for everyday driving, as well as at the racetrack. The M specific technology combines the typical agility of a rear-wheel drive with the control of an all-wheel drive. You can choose between the drive variants 4WD and 4WD Sport.
M Carbon precision strut.
The M Carbon front end strut brace increases frontend rigidity and contributes to a greater steering precision and accuracy. 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.
The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic offers numerous shifting options: extremely dynamic or particularly comfortable and smooth. You can shift manually using the gear lever or the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, and adjust the shifting speed of the automatic transmission using Drivelogic.
M Servotronic.
In every driving situation, M Servotronic delivers the right steering power, by adjusting to suit the current driving speed. In addition, it delivers a direct and precise steering feel at any speed. The system is specifically calibrated for the M line and offers three different settings that can be selected via the M setup.
M Compound brakes.
Thanks to the use of various materials, M Compound brakes achieve outstanding deceleration values and are extremely stable and highly durable. They also weigh less, which has a positive impact on agility, dynamics and acceleration. The Blue metallic brake callipers with the M designation are the hallmark of these high-performance M specific brakes.
M Sport exhaust system.
The M Sport exhaust system delivers a dynamic sound that can be modified via the integrated exhaust valve mechanism. The SPORT and SPORT+ programmes, which can be selected via the Driving dynamics buttons, are accentuated by an even more intense engine sound, while the comfort-oriented programme prioritises more discreet engine acoustics.
Front design.
The front of the BMW X3 M Competition emphasises the tremendous potential of this high-performance automobile. The distinctive M kidney grille with double slats in black high-gloss featuring the model logo radiates an air authoritative athleticism. It is bordered by especially narrow-sculpted light tubes with optional BMW Laserlight, which additionally emphasise the dynamic appearance. The mighty, trapezoidal air inlets with integrated air curtains round off the overall athletic impression created by the vehicle.

With its broad, low-set stance, the full LED rear lights with their distinctive 3D look and the vertical reflectors arranged beneath, the rear of the BMW X3 Competition displays a strong presence. The optional carbon rear diffuser and the M sport exhaust system with the two striking twin tailpipes underline the motorsport genes of the vehicle and further enhance the dynamic appearance of this high-performance automobile.
M leather steering wheel.
The M leather steering wheel with shift paddles and contoured thumb rests provides a direct, athletic steering experience and maximum control. M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engines.
The BMW X3 M40i is powered by a three-litre 6-cylinder inline petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. With an output of 265 kW (360 hp) and a maximum torque of 500 Nm, it has a sporty driving performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The BMW X3 M40d comes with a 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.
M Sport suspension
M Sport suspension is notable for a more dynamic suspension with tighter damper settings. It also features a moderately higher spring constant and harder stabilisers. Combined together, they result in an even more direct suspension design, which enables a distinctly sporty driving style.
8-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission.
The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission offers incredibly sporty gear changes. Whether automatic or manual using the selector lever or gearshift paddles – for comfortable coasting or incredibly dynamic driving. In SPORT mode and with the selector lever in the left-hand S/M position, the gear shifts are configured for the maximum performance.
Variable sport steering.
The variable sport steering with Servotronic creates a direct and agile steering response and ensures that less physical effort is required to turn the wheel. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel with varying steering ratios. This improves handling when driving more dynamically and reduces the effort needed to steer when parking and turning.
M sport differential.
The M sport differential optimises traction and driving stability when changing lanes or accelerating out of a bend, when taking bends at high speeds or on different road surfaces. Traction is optimised with the help of an electronically operated device that reduces the difference in revolution speed between the rear wheels.
M Sport brake.
The M Sport brake has four-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear in blue (optionally in red high-gloss) with the M designation is internally ventilated and features large brake discs to ensure an outstanding braking performance.
BMW X3 M40i specific design elements.
The design of the BMW X3 M40i conveys pure dynamics and athletic elegance. Creating this effect on the exterior are M-specific design elements such as the M kidney grille with M logo and double slats in black high-gloss, black M exterior mirrors and optional 21-inch gloss-lathed M light alloy wheels – rounded off by prominent tailpipes with free-form trims in Black Chrome ‘Two Teeth’ style. In the interior, an M leather steering wheel with distinctive contrast stitching and sport seats for driver and front passenger bring out the sporting flair.

Thanks to larger seat and backrest bolsters, and well-defined side bolsters, they provide excellent ergonomics and a high degree of lateral support.
M leather steering wheel.
The M Leather steering wheel including multifunction buttons, an M badge and an integrated driver-side airbag is featured in three-spoke design with a cut-out at the 6 o'clock spoke. The M specific instrument cluster* offers a particularly precise and focused display of driving data in the SPORT and TRACK modes. In this way, values such as boost pressure or tyre pressure and temperatures are always in view, even on the race track. Operation and configuration is carried out using the M MODE button on the control unit in the centre console. * Available for the BMW X3 M Competition.
